In-School Consultation

We provide weekly consultation to students and staff in all of Somerville’s public schools and early childhood centers.  Our consulting psychologists and social workers tailor their work to the particular needs that are identified by the staff of each school.  Trust and mutual support is promoted by having the same consultant work all year with a given school and typically return for the next school year.  Through these weekly contacts, teachers, guidance workers, and school administrators have regular opportunities to get a consultant’s perspective on anything that concerns them about individual students or classroom situations. The consultant may help a teacher look at the situation in a new way, or provide examples of how he or she might discover more about the interests and competencies that each child has and how to engage these strengths in appropriate school performance.  In some schools, the consultant provides group activities for students at a particular grade level to help the staff and students learn to cope with behavior that has been a source of distress, e.g., bulling, or obstacles to making friends
