Suicide Prevention
Research has found that individuals who have lost a loved one to suicide are at greater risk of attempting suicide themselves. To reduce this risk, the State Department of Public Health encourages the development of support groups in which individuals who have lost someone to suicide can feel less isolated and helpless. Our program provides outreach to such individuals to:
- learn what these survivors of a family member’s suicide find helpful and what they experience as barriers to getting support;
- explore how these survivors can provide support for one another; and
- collaborate with them to educate other survivors about the impact of suicide on them and their families. Individuals may connect with this program through self-referral, or by responding to our news articles and notices about meetings of focus groups to help us learn what resources they would like to have available.
