Making Referrals Somerville Mental Health Association welcomes referrals to the whole range of our health promotion, prevention, and treatment services. Under “Contact Information,” we provide phone numbers to use in making referrals to these different programs. For referrals to our mental health and substance abuse services, we centralize our intake, and then decide which of our service sites, clinical teams, and individual clinicians is best equipped to serve a particular family or individual adult. When a referral comes from an inpatient, partial hospital, or residential treatment program, it is most effective when our clinical staff can participate actively in the discharge planning. Likewise, when the referral represents a major transition from an ongoing service plan for a family or foster family. In all such cases, we encourage the service programs to contact us early in their transition planning process. For Somerville residents, we have some capacity to offer services for fees that are based on ability to pay. Our services generally require that the individual is enrolled in a health insurance plan that covers mental health and/or substance abuse disorders. We accept most behavioral health insurance plans, but an important part of a referral is determining whether the person’s insurance is one that covers our services. While we give priority to Somerville residents, some of our programs, such as our Community Treatment Team, serve many Cambridge residents as well. And most of our programs have the capacity to serve individuals who first used our services as Somerville residents, then moved to a neighboring community, and want to return for services.
